Q: As a substance use disordered addict, have you found that healthcare professionals treat you differently once they find out? If so, how?

A: Health care professionals are professionals who have seen it all—particularly they see lots and lots of patients who lie and lie and lie, and don’t get the best health care because they don’t give the health care professionals all the information the health care professionals need to do their job.

My health care professionals are absolutely delighted that I always tell them the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about my drug use history—all the way down to which veins they should hit and which ones to avoid—and I get the most amazingly wonderful health care as a result of my honesty.
