denial is not a river in Egypt

Have you
ever been “in denial”?

Denial is
a conscious refusal
to believe
that you are an addict

Have you
experienced
anosognosia?

Anosognosia
is like denial

except anosognosia
is really weird

I was surprised
to learn

how many addicts
suffer from
anosognosia

and

how often
anosognosia

is

misdiagnosed
as
denial

anosognosia
a mental health disorder where a person demonstrates the inability to recognize his or
her own illness or handicap; an unconscious inability to notice that a problem exists
Anosognosia patients do not agree that they need treatment because they do not
notice their own illness.

Because he suffered from anosognosia he refused treatment, although it was plain for
everyone else to see that he is an addict.

denial
conscious refusal to believe that a problem exists
We could not break through his denial that he is an addict

If someone
suggested that
you are
an addict
or
an alcoholic

and
you are unsure

or
don’t agree

or
think they’re crazy

or
think they’re wrong

or
you just don’t want to
hear about it

then you need to
seek a diagnosis
from a
mental health professional
with

Board Certification

in either

Addiction Psychiatry
from the
American Board of
Psychiatry and Neurology

or

Addiction Medicine
from the
American Board of
Preventive Medicine

Anosognosia is
an unconscious inability
to notice
that you are an addict

Denial is
a conscious refusal
to believe
that you are an addict

Only a
highly-qualified
board-certified
addiction
mental health professional
can differentiate
between
anosognosia and denial

Because I
suffered from anosognosia
after completing
Old Rehab

it took me
seven months after
my last bump

plus
much help from
board-certified
mental health professionals

before I admitted
that
I was
an addict

Because I
suffered from anosognosia

it took me
seven months
after my last bump
doing 12-step work
every day

and
calling my sponsor regularly

and
attending meetings daily

and
reading the book

and
meditating from time to time

and
helping other addicts

and
staying clean and sober

before I was able to
complete traditional Step 1

Traditional Step 1
We admitted we were
powerless over our addiction
that our lives
had become unmanageable

Whether you are
experiencing

anosognosia
or
denial

that experience
stops at

Traditional Step 1

AND THAT’S THE TRUTH

NEVER TRUST A TRAIN
THEY HAVE
LOCO MOTIVES
